Easy as Pie: Dinner at Piebird

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

There’s something about winter that just makes you want to hole up and hibernate. I have never been one for cold weather and even the mild winters in Raleigh have me bundled up like Ralphie’s brother in “A Christmas Story.” It’s no surprise then that I turn to homey comfort foods in the winter; lots of soups, stews, and pot pie. We have heard about the delicious desserts at Piebird (618 N. Person St Raleigh, NC 27604) for a while, but I needed a piping hot pot pie on a particular chilly night. Continue reading

Stumbling Along Tobacco Road

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

As a diehard fan of the Green Bay Packers fan living in North Carolina, I pretty much have to go to a sports bar to catch their games so I often find myself plopped down on barstool watching a game.  As we have mentioned in earlier posts, we are big fans of Manchesters on Leesville, which is our usual game watching venue.  We went to Tobacco Road shortly before the actual football season after  we had heard it mentioned that they served duck confit as part of their game day cuisine.  We love our bar food, but to have duck confit as part of a food that normally consists of hot wings and bratwursts seemed like Tobacco Road was trying to take football eats to the next level. Top chef Season 7, Episode 13: Showdown in Singapore

This season’s finale seemed to come out of nowhere; it seems like just yesterday, I was being grossed out by chef John’s nasty long dreadlocks, and now we’re at part one of the finale. Maybe it’s because of the format of this episode’s elimination challenge, a team event (!), that I don’t feel ready to name anyone as a Top Chef. Continue reading

Stroll down bad food memory lane…

Writing about food has made me appreciate a good meal. It’s also made me more aware of when eating out is just outright terrible.  As much as I’ve had some wonderful food, it’s the bad moments that have been the most memorable…and most fun to talk about. Continue reading

Adventures in home cooking: Lamb sliders

I know that I am in that this a blasphemy here in Pork Central, USA but I have to say that my favorite meat would have to be lamb.  I could do a whole blog devoted totally to lamb and other sheep related meat products.  Naturally when I first noticed lamb sliders on the bar menu at Manchester’s grill (see http://wp.me/pAgIi-2T and  http://wp.me/pAgIi-bE )  I was pretty excited, and I have been a fan of them ever since.   So, I thought I would try my own home made lamb sliders.

Kitchen Catastrophies: Tony’s lamb steak Raz El Hanout

After weeks of talking about and craving lamb, I finally broke down and bought some lamb steaks at the store the other day. Partially because my uncle has a sheep farm in Wisconsin, my family and I have always enjoyed this tender and complex meat.  I am not sure if this is the experience of most Midwestern families, but this meat seems like it was about as common as pork in my family kitchen as a child.  Anyways, it had been awhile since I had eaten home-cooked lamb, so I decided it was time to take a stab at cooking it on my own.
